Is using a stencil buffer overkill for a "Quake" console effect?

So what is the stencil buffer used for besides reflections...?

Most commonly, shadows. I've heard of people using it for overlays. This paper suggests some other uses.
Using it for overlays would be overkill
It can be used for a variety of things, most commonly though shadows and reflections. Portal surfaces are another good use of it, to limit where on screen the destination view is drawn.
