game programming or other programming
hello peeps.
i am currently doing a comp sci degree in uni of syd in oz and i love programming, its just that i am not quiet sure wat path to follow in programmen.
i was thinkin that it is easier for me to enter a firm straight outta uni, work hard as a programmer , maybe reach a managerial position. sounds bit boring though. my question is .. how much harder is it to follow game programming compared to the path that i mentioned b4. is it alot harder and is more work required. how may of u dudez know for sure that your future lies in game programming and how are gonna go about aiming for this game programming goal you have ??
thanx for any input dudez. :D
you have moved the mouse please restart windows for changes to take effect :) :)
Sounds like a lot of questions hehe! =)
Hey, what year are you in Syd. Univ?
I bet game programming is not that hard compared to the programming path that you have in mind. Though, I''m not sure about the pay. I think game programming pays (just) a bit lower, but I could be wrong.
Good luck with your degree!
BTW, did you like BLUE? hehehe!

I don''t personally want to work for a game house (if I sell my own games, then great, but I like doing it too much to do it professionally and make it a job). From what I gather, programmers in other areas make considerably more money than game programmers. (I''m in a software engineering team for a network security product, so I know the rough estimate of what we make, but I have no clue what game programmers make -- plus, I don''t think that game programmers get stock options )
As far as breaking in, I think that game programming tends to be harder to get into, but this isn''t from experience.

Don''t get blinded by the "cream of the crop" like Id software.
Generally Game Development pays less than normal Software Engineering, and the chances of actually making a game that sells among the thousands that are released each year are relatively slim.
But if you''re dedicated and good, you can make it happen...
