Lighting problems

I am having a very frustrating problem with lighting! Even though I''ve set values of 0.01 for intensity of both ambient and diffuse lights, when I turn them both on, everything appears fullbright as if there was no lighting effects, everything is as bright as the original texture! What the F is going on? When I use only the diffuse light, things look pretty good, but the intensity I set it at is completely ignored and makes no difference. When I have no lights enabled, but I have lighting enabled, everything is very dark but not quite black. Should I be using glColorMaterial??? How can I fix this? Thanks! -E
It sounds like it could be a normal problem. Have you verified that the normals are pointing perpendicular to you triangles/polygons.

To set the colour of a polygon while lighting use the glMaterial commands listed in the red book.
