hello, i have a big problem. i''d like to solve it myself, but now i can''t success, so i need help. I have a Mandrake 8.0 with a 2.4.3-20mdk kernel. i would like to use AGP, this kernel can''t (maybe on module, but how to use this agp module stuff ?). So i decided to use a new kernel: 2.4.17 and 2.5.1 I configured it correctly with agpgart enabled not in module. I restart my computer and AGP worked ! wow !! it was kool ! But when i shutdown my computer, linux stopped on sending TERM signal and never follow to kill and unmount my partitions. So, i loose datas... i tried again, check if the acpi was correctly enabled... all was OK for me (i compiled around 20 kernels). But can''t stop my machine correctly. WHY ??? PLEASE ? and sometimes with some 2.4.7 & > kernels, i loose my mouse. i don''t understand anymore. Thanx for any replies! cordially, Fratt
What command are you using to shut down the computer?
How long did you wait when it said sending TERM signal?

hi !

i use all the commands i know:

from X, shutdown,
form console: init 0, init 6, shutdown -h(-r) now

i wait more than 2 minutes and decide to stop it badly.

when i press ctrl alt sup, it doesn''t do anything, i can''t change to another term ctrl alt +Fx
hrmm....ok

I''m going to recap.
So you shutdown out of X
then type init 0
then type init 6
then type shutdown -h now

What happens if you shutdown from X to the console. Then su into root, and just type shutdown -h now from there without the init 0 or init 6?

I''m just trying to get all the what-ifs to get to the problem.

Mandrake is fucked like that

The only problem I''ve seen from it is it takes a long time to boot (fsck)

Way back when I had mandrake it actually disappeared after awhile...

weirdishness
i''ve done everything that can make me reboot or shutdown, even in the console after quitting X.
it stops on the sending TERM signal. As it couldn''t stop some processus, and couldn''t go into KILL him. Linux kernel can''t stand that !

ACPI was enabled as my motherboard supported it (for the reboot).
or maybe AGP by the kernel (as it''s not advised by Nvidia) block all the system when shutting down !

may i try to compile a simple kernel without AGP nor ACPI.
to do that, i have to know how to load the AGP module ? does anyone know ?

than you much

Fratt
