The ''better lawyer'' argument is more important in the US than it is here. Lots of people do just fine with the ''free'' lawyers in the UK. The problem with the registered post idea is that you can''t prove you didn''t tamper with it. Ideally you need a 3rd party to see the document and sign a statement saying they saw it on a given date.

sending design ideas and docs to companies
quote: Original post by krez
it''s not that this method isn''t valid proof that you did it first, but rather that they (they being the lying cheating stealing company that took your idea) can afford better lawyers.
It may be proof that you did it first, but it''s not legally binding (i.e. not recognized by the courts) and therefore means nothing. That''s my point. It has nothing to do with lawyers.

IANAL, don''t take this as legal advice. You can not copyright ideas, only your expression of those ideas. If you send them a story, they can most likely steal the plot or the underlying idea of that story as long as they just change the names and other identifying information and have someone else write it down in his own words.
Sara,
I am in "The same boat" as you are. Here is my plan of action.
First, I am going to write a couple of complete game scripts (Storyboard, dialogue, instructions to artists, programmers, and animators) ans I am also going to include a "How to play" document (for the players instruction manual).
Then I am going to spend $30 and have the doucment(s) actually copyrighted via the library of congress (you can get more information from their website).
Then I am going to make excerpts from these documents (showing prospective employers) that I can indeed perform the tasks needed (Creative thinker, communicate my ideas to the development team, etc.)
Then I will attempt to reply to help wanted ads for game designers my mailing with my resume and cover letter.
I hope the nest for both you and me!
Sincerely, ion

Is our existance a life-long virtual reality simulation from another realm?
Sara,
Sorry about the typo on my post.
It was supposed to read:
"I hope for the BEST", not Nest.

Your stuff is copyrighted already, don''t worry about that. If you want, get a real copyright (about $30) then you can collect bigger damages.
Now for the ideas, you have a problem. You''ll need them to sign a NDA.

Sorry this is off topic but...

The best thing about the internet is the way people with no experience or qualifications can pretend to be completely superior to other people who have no experience or qualifications.
