WineX (yay!): Is it stable?
I like the idea of being able to play DirectX games on Linux, and I recently heard about WineX (months ago) when Mandrake released their distribution packaged with WineX and a bunch of games for it.
To people who have tried it, is WineX worth the download?
I''m bored, so I''ll give it a try. I''ve heard it only goes up to DirectX 7, but that''s not so bad (I don''t think I have any games that use 8, heh). I recently decided I wanted to play Theif again, so this is possibly my chance without booting Windows (I''m lazy, go figure).
Dunno, I could never get the CVS code to compile... Of course, that''s because I downloaded it with WinCVS and then put it on my linux box (my linux machine isn''t directly connected to the net, and I''m not aware of any linux cvs clients that support proxies). *sigh* If only they had source tarballs for download. I don''t wanna pay anything until I know it works.

Ah that reminds me. Null, if you''re downloading the source version, would you mind tarring it up for me?

That''s fine. Jedi Knight should work, then (one of my personal fav''s). I''m willing to bet that Lords of the Realm 2 would as well.
Do you have to pay to "subscribe" for WineX? I tried to download the prepackaged release, and it said you have to, I think. Otherwise you have to download the source code (that''s security, I tell ya ).
And I dunno. I don''t have ANY games that use Directx 8. JK uses DX5, Lords of the Realm 2 uses DX3... none of them use newer technology.
But then, my Linux computer has only a 2 GB hard drive .

Isn''t that part of being a programmer?...

I packed up the CVS release and I''m currently uploading it to here (it''ll be a second or two after this post is done that it''s uploaded). It''s about 5 MB, be warned .
My experience with WineX hasn''t been too sucessful so far. It really isn''t WineX''s fault though. Thief is pretty evil it turns out (WineX spits out lots of messages about how it''s try to exploit flaws in Windows to do certain things, and then WineX gives up). Alice ran, but very slowly (it turns out Alice has a known issue with Wine/WineX, it uses a synchronization feature that runs poorly unless it''s in the kernel). UT doesn''t run in it, but since I also have the Loki port of UT that doesn''t matter much. I haven''t tried Diablo II yet (I lent my CD''s to someone, waiting for them back still ). I''ll try Deus Ex in the future too (another UT engine based game). I don''t own too many games though . WineX still (predictably) runs all the stuff Wine could run though (WinAmp, Notepad, et cetera).

Thanks dude I''m in the process of downloading now, and I''ll report back when I''m done as to my success/failure.

hmmm, maybe thats why CS would never run on wine...
now if i could jsut get vfat to work... time to go kernel hacking again

More updates: The original Unreal works (it crashed once, but it probably would have done that in Windows anyway). I figured out that you have to have write access to the IsUninst.exe file in your Windows directory to use InstallShield (if anyone else has any problems with that). I took that WineX archive down; I didn''t want to waste space on SF''s servers and most people don''t have problems with the CVS anyway .
