Yes, I agree about what you are saying.
Problem with the 3D Big projects is that they are mostly in general not break even. So the costs are high and expensive.
costs > profits ; If this happen too much, then the investor will stop soon or later investing in your software games company.
I agree that working on card/puzzle projects is the best thing you can do as a shareware developer.
Downloads -> Sales, How many pieces do shareware games sell ?
