Less/Non-Violent Gamestypes
List them, discuss them, invent them! Just please, nothing about guns, gun-laws, killing, violence, etc. We already have plenty of threads filled with that.
Card Games : Wow! Total lack of violence! And MS'' Soltiraire is the number one most played computer game ever. *shudders* Yes, it''s a bit pointless to replicate a simple non-electronic game on a computer, but people are lazy (or can''t/won''t fight for the table space.) Ever try playing with a real deck in a car? Not too easy. Doing so on a laptop or PDA is, however.
Board Games : Well, most are violent and with a few exceptions most are about controlling the board or finishing first. Same schpiel about replicating a non-electronic game but with a few extra points: automatic execution of rules (Monopoly); easier to find multiple opponents (computer or people); can''t lose the little pieces.
Falling/Floating Block : Tetris, Bust-a-Move, etc.
More to come . . .

''Music-games'' like parrapa the rapper and vibribbon. And most sport games are also without violence.
Constructive games and "software toys." Something like the Sims, Simcity, themepark, Railroad Tycoon etc. is pretty non violent.
IMHO, the best form of non-violent / non-competitive gameplay is aesthetic gameplay. Two examples are Roller Coaster Tycoon and The Sims, where the player doesn''t only try to win the game, but to create a beautiful house or park.
Ok here is the game I am working on. Be forewarned tho, its themes are intimately tied in with drug culture so don''t read if you are offended. But if you are offended by themed video games, you are just too sensitivite anyways....
The basic premise is that you are a stoner and therefore want to increase both your HIGH and KARMA. The gameplay revolves around managing these two levels, increasing them so that you eventually reach a state of enlightenment. Every NPC in the game also manages their own respective levels. Coppers will have Low levels of both HIGH and KARMA while pimps and such may have a high HIGH and low KARMA. People interact differently with you based on their current values, desired values along with yours. A cop may chase you down and pummel you if you are too HIGH in his presense. He may just ignore you.
The gameplay is an 2d tile scroller where you explore the world, looking for stuff like artifact bongs, good weed, neat places to hang out. You could meet up with some of your friends in the woods and smoke and thereby get a bonus increase to your high because of the presense of a. your friends and b. the nature of the environment where you smoke. There would be A LOT of statistical juggling going on in the background, calculating the effects of various objects and situations.
I don''t think i''m explaining this adequately. If anyone has played the game Below the Root, think of that with its emphasis on exploration and spiritual advancement. Yea it would be possible to kill someone in this game, but there would be a SEVERE KARMA penalty. So much so that it might make the game unwinnable.

bonus round: try to remember where you left your zippo lighter when you return to the woods after being chased away by the police.

Yes, there will be a convenience store you can visit and buy/eat stuff at, and you will need some sort of fire device to combine(weed, pipe) and use(pipe). And yes, having a nice zippo will give you a bonus. If you forget it, you can always go back and look for it. I got a nice Ultima7 style item interface going on.
lol I like the idea... the weed game... with the current fad going on (at least here) it might even gain enough public attention to sell well.
Best of luck, let me know when it´s done.

quote:Um, that kind of blows the low/no violence idea. Anyway, I was hoping for encompasing types, not nescesairlly detailed decriptions of exmaples. (Which, yes, makes my Card Game example a bad one.)

Back on topic:
Directoral/Physical : Pipe Dream, Chu-Chu Rocket & The Incredible Machine (cartoon violence). I''m hesitant to list the Lemmings series since there wer some fairly graphical death animations (albeit without blood, guts ''n'' gore) along with the "Nuke" option in case you botched the level.
Escape : This is certainly an older type. I can''t think of any titles right now, but the premise is that usually you are trapped somewhere and are pitted against natural forces on your way out. These tend to fall under the Directoral/Physical category.
What about ICO? I haven''t played it, but it seems that the main focus is puzzle solving, with combat only occurring rarely and mainly being of the "chase critters away" form. It''s a very pretty game by all accounts, and a blast just to walk through.

You can''t have "civilization" without "civil".
