I downloaded, compiled, and installed gcc 3.0.2 about 2 weeks ago on a linux box. I''ve been doing a lot of compiling of other programs over this last week. It seems to me that gcc 3.0.2 compiles programs faster than gcc 2.95.3. Now am I on dope or is this really true? Is it even possible to make a compiler compile faster in a new version? I don''t know, maybe I am just dillusional, but I think this is one dillusion I like. Sure, why wouldn''t it be possible to spead up a compiler? Your source code is just instructions to a program - the compiler - when that program is restructured it''s definately possible to gain speed advantages.
