So I just heard of this, and it sounds interesting. (public benefit corporation)

Sounds like a mix of nonprofit mission and for profit corporation, mixing do goodary with the bottom line.

All of it sounded gravy, until I heard that the certification org, asks for at least $500 a year, for "administrative compliance"

Is this actually a good way to connect with our customers and workforce?

or

is this just another Social justice badge of honor., with variable value.

What do YOU think? Decision-making is much more than just asking other people for their thoughts. If you're thinking 500 dollars a year is a lot of money, obviously you're in no position to seriously contemplate going that direction at this time.

And if you have no specific area of social benefit in mind, you're just toying with farflung ideas of grandiose pie in the sky. What social benefit area would you target, that's a much more important question than whether the 500 dollar compliance fee is “worth it.” Poverty? Hunger? Homelessness? Where would you want to put your efforts, and would your games all be geared to social awareness of, or even directly make a positive impact on, your chosen social benefit area? THAT's the question you should be asking. Of yourself.

500 is not that bad, but I'm trying to figure out what we get for $500…

either way,

right, I was thinking of helping minorities in games..

but that is more of a DI/ DEI thing, which honestly has gone too far these days, n my humble opinion.

You get to continue being a B corp, if you pass the cert process. So: what is the social benefit focus of your planned company?

Well,

I was thinking of focusing on bringing on people with disabilities and or mental health challenges into the industry.

Giving them a start, or a training of what it's like to be in an indie studio.

I know my little startup is a small place, but converting our org into a training ground for individuals that are underserved and “not normal”, may allow people who have challenges to explore games as a side Hussle, and maybe a proving ground, of sorts.

IDK if this Diversity mission is enough though….

It needs more thought and research into social benefit companies. Try writing a mission statement, see how strong a mission it makes.
