Is it possible to change the text color of an element based off the background-color with css?

I am wondering if it is possible to change the text color of an element based on its background color. Like if the background color were a lighter color then the text would be a darker color and if the background color were a darker color then the text would be a lighter color.

If it is possible to do so then please describe, in detail, how to do it.
