So when it comes to team collaboration, we use skype. It works for us, and allows for voice and text chat. Even tho it is old.

I joined a team back in 2016, and they were transitioning from skype to discord. They were also using google hang out

I had issues with discord, and still do.

I was considering skype for business but that is being phased out for Microsoft teams.

I've used the Free slack some years ago, and I use paid slack for work.

What are your experiences with these and other communication platforms.

Any pros and cons you'd like to share?

Currently I know Zoom is where it is at, we use zoom for work. But it is a web conferencing tool, not a communication tool.

I use Slack because my coworkers use it. I use Discord because the GDNet folks use it. I used to use Skype, when people wanted to have video calls on Skype.

I guess I'm saying I use whatever the folks I'm dealing with use.

In the past, I've used Whatsapp and Asana and Trello, and AIM and ICQ and Jabber…

I totally abandoned Skype and Google Hangout since Discord because:

• On Discord, I can do all I can do on skype +

1. Stream my screen in real-time (this also made team viewer obsolete for me)
2. Create chat room for conferences
3. Good moderation tools
4. I can use it in the web browser without needing to download the app and even with the app it does not eat as many resources as skype does

• I can also do cross-promotions and networking just by joining other groups on Discord.
• Most gaming communities already migrated on Discord, for me, Discord is sort of Facebook + Twitter + external forums(downside in regards to external forums is that you cannot bump topics so all posts resume to intense-fast-burn rather than slow-long time-burn like on standard forums)
• It is very solid if you plan on making a community around your game and you want to keep an active interest in the project for the fans, good on fan-developer engagements

So skype is 100% obsolete in this regard.

As for Google Hangouts, I use them from time to time but only when I do a conference with some of the publishers who still prefer those over Discord.

This is just my opinion so feel free to disapprove of it

The thing id, discord seems to focus on text chats more than voice chat. Where skype balances both.

We do use discord for community communications, but for dev team stuff, I find skype a little more intimate.

I think that is specific to how a community uses the Discord and how you see things, for example in my Fan Community Discord I personally prefer to use Text chat and during test sessions, some fans go on voice and stream their play, this is very good for me to see how they actually play the game. And on Game dev groups, investor & publisher groups/rooms I prefer to use a voice channel.

if you want to be intimate during dev sessions you can:

1. make a room and only give visibility and access to the dev team
2. make an entire new Discord just for that purpose

But then again, it may come down to personal preferences
