Wanting to Make a Game

Hi! Ever since I was a kid I was always fascinated by games, I believe we all were and still are. There was a certain mystique while playing a game, something that helped us all in someway. I'll never forget playing the original super Mario bros and then going to super Mario 64 and wanting to collect all the stars just to see Yoshi! This is something I want to replicate, I want to make a game that people will enjoy. I know absolutely nothing about game design and I don't want to come off as ignorant when I say I want to make a large open world game. I understand it may be an insane amount of work, possibly unrealistic/impossible for a small team. But that's what I want to know, if anyone could be real with me and tell me the realistic amount of time, people, and money I would need to make a large open world game. I understand that it being my first game is unrealistic but that's my end goal and I just want to know the specifics of it. I greatly appreciate anyone who gives any tips or information. I'm grateful that such a community exists.

Depends on the resources you have access to. How many people are there on your team?

Go look at the game credits on games of a similar size and scope, then go look at the time between when the group released their previous game.  Often these games are 2-year, 3-year, or 5-year release cycles.

These days a large, open-world professional game will take anywhere from 100-500 work years, or more if you have budget.  For cost, multiply that many years times a professional's annual salary.   They are far beyond the cost and scope of a hobby developer.

Individuals and small teams can make small open-world games, but be prepared for it to be less than 1% of what you see from professional games. Even "bargain bin" games have development costs of ten or twenty million dollars.

,My friend , I was on your situation in 2017 , To make a game you need to Learn C# Programming , For Graphics I recommend Inkscape it's open source and reliable , For Sound , I use personally LMMS and Audacity. To learn about game design , you should buy a book " Fundamentals of game design ". After learning c# , Download Unity and Follow Unity tutorial and Then learn more by Brackeys tutorials on YouTube. While Learning You can make Small projects.
