Learning to program in general is a difficult process. It''s not enough to just learn a language and call yourself a programmer. Learning a language is just the first step in the process, after that the next step would be to learn ADT''s (Advanced Data Types). The most common ADT''s are Linked lists, stacks, queues, and hash tables. From there you can move onto algorithms. After that there are plenty of things you can learn, from API''s to encryption, to file formats, to compression...the list goes on and on.
Somewhere along the line you''ll develop the experience and knowledge nessassary to think out your programming problems properly rather than hacking things together until it works correctly.
It takes time, and a lot of programming in order to develop the skills nessassary to become a game programmer. The only way to get anywhere is to keep at it, and buy/read as many books on the subject as you can.
