How well suited do you think this retro style is to the current indie scene?
A small retro tune i made using the SNES soundset. Would like your feedback.
Depending on the context in which it's supposed to be used it could be suitable or not :P A useless remark, maybe, but it's hard to say anything about suitability without knowing what the track is supposed to accompany.
Apart from that, it's a nice track. By not adhering to any obvious tonal centre most of the time it becomes ethereal and mysterious, and when it does finally stabilise at 1:49 it feels like the dramatic story is about to unfold. The sound design is nicely done too; it comes across as retro because of the pure waves you use as a single instrument but modern because of the way you use them and the delay you've added.
I'm aiming to make a 2d-sidescroller type game with a low-fi fantasy feel to it.
Thx for the breakdown :)
Sounds great and retro!
Can you tell how did you create the sounds? Is the SNES soundset a thing you can get from somewhere like a VST-instrument or a real SNES soundchip?
About suitability, it really depends on the game. The song sounds like background music of a storytelling scene or a slowish adventure scene. Do you have any reference-game for the sound design & music and the actual gameplay?
