I have a 13" mac book pro from 2012, overall a good little machine,
but the keyboard is not the best, and after a few years of use the battery life has become pretty poor.
I would personally recommend, and would buy another one, but these two issues might bother you more than they bother me.
My old machine was the last model to have a battery that's easily accessible. I put in a new battery a few months ago, which was a huge improvement from the aging one I'd had, but it was also a huge reminder of how far laptop power consumption and batteries have come. Even with the new battery, and its a first-party one not a questionable knock-off, I only get a few scant hours away from the wall socket.
You can still replace the battery in newer Mac laptops, either by sending it in or by taking it in to your local Apple store if you have one nearby. You can do it yourself too, iFixit and the like can help you there, although its far more involved than older models. I dislike the newer trend of fully-sealed electronics though, and would prefer that machines stay more easily serviceable.
On another note, to the OP, if you do go with the Mac, another thing to consider is whether you can get by on the Iris /Iris Pro GPU. Unfortunately, though, only their highest-end Macbook Pro has a discrete GPU, and its even aging a bit. I think when they update their laptop line around June, they'll probably upgrade to a Geforce 970m, which will be a huge improvement -- and Broadwell too, on the CPU side, if intel is offering the quad-core parts by then. Another possibility is Apple and others are going to skip quad-core broadwell in performance machines; broadwell made great gains in power consumption, but is only about 4% faster than Haswell, and Skylake, the successor to Broadwell is supposed to be out this fall in time for back-to-school. Its got a new architecture and should see more substantial performance gains (the typical 10%-15%) while not giving up any ground on power consumption compared to broadwell.
I'm planning to ride out my current Mac until then, and am considering picking up a new model after I see what's on offer.
