Heh, that was pretty satisfying.

Kinda funny that not a single one of your shout outs is still around.

Yup. I remember those names, as I started lurking here back in 2001 and didn't bother to create an account until a few years later. I was recommended to visit the site from friends in the #C and #C++ IRC groups (where I was a moderator at the time WAY back in the 1990's).

That was way back when anonymous posting was both allowed and commonplace.

The site was much more juvenile back then. The antics of individuals like nes8bit and others were very formative to the community, but even so, probably wouldn't be tolerated very long under today's more mature environment.

I'm not sure, but I think EAT ROPE, floor caek, and Washu's tentacles were all after that time.

Thank you jbadams, I am looking into making retro arcade type of games strictly 2d. I am interested in making extremely in depth 2d rpg, targeting systems Windows, Linux and Mac Osx. This is just for fun and not commercial purposes and I am willing to invest years into it. I am currently evaluating SFML and the Thor extensions because I have been programming in c++ for the last 10 years and that library is cross platform. I have used SDL in the past as well so I will evaluate that as well.

SDL has advanced a few leaps forward, now being on 2.x (instead of being frozen forever at 1.2 dry.png).

SFML has proven to be a worthy alternative; I currently use SFML and am very pleased with it.

Development is ongoing with both of those APIs.

+1. Mostly people seem to be using Unreal 4, Unity, SDL, SMFL, ect.

The indie database has a nice list the most popular engines. Maybe check that out and see if one strikes you?

I remember some of those guys too. I've been around since 2000 or so. Myopic Rhino really rings a bell, but I've no idea why.

I have looked at Unity and Unreal, if I wanted to make something commercial I would pick one of those.. I am not doing that, to put it in perspective I lucked out married a geek/gamer/gear head. My wife and I are going to restore a 1967 Chevy impala as a couple's project over a few years. She has her personal projects, gamedev is going to be mine, and she is going to help.

I have been looking at 3d engines, brought it down to 2, Ogre and Irrlicht. Leaning towards ogre, cleaner code base more active community even though I have a lot more experience with irrlicht. Decisions.

To clarify in the process of making my rpg I will have side projects, 3d games quick 2d games etc

Hi.

If you have read the Andre Lamothe books thats way old school. holy crap that was my first thought of when I read Andre Lamothe.

I read then when I very first started(A long time ago).

Things have changed a lot. if your doing 2d you should look into doing 2d but use 3d much cooler things to do.

Even if it's not commercial, why not use either Unity or Unreal? Just curious. I'd also suggest looking at Leadwerks, if you're exploring options anyway.

Tentacles: still a thing. I think that sometimes we take things far too serious on this site now, sometimes.

Speaking as a professional: a bit of levity never hurt anyone.

No reason not to use unity for a 2d game.

In time the project grows, the ignorance of its devs it shows, with many a convoluted function, it plunges into deep compunction, the price of failure is high, Washu's mirth is nigh.

Yeah, I remember things being much more lively back in the mid-2000s on the old site when I used to lurk. A flamewar once in a while can be entertaining. It certainly seems like there are fewer people posting bizarre drunk/high topics, which were some of my favorite lounge fodder.
