Hi! Ive been dreaming of being an independent game developer for about 6 months now, Im 15, and Ive made a few platformers in Game Maker (with code) and dabbled and messed around with Unity but I havent finished anything significant or satisfying. In the last week or so Ive fallen into this hole of depression, or i guess its like depression, where I cant seem to find the motivation to work on anything. If anyone knows of a way to dig myself out of this hole, Id love to hear and try any ideas but mostly im here because I dont know much code and Im looking for advice on where to start and other people that are out there with the same goals and dreams as me. If youre reading this and you can help me in any way or you too are looking for some one that shares this same dream, please reply and let me know... Thank you for reading!
In Need of Help
Perhaps you might want to look into learning a language at this point, as it will remove the restrictions that are imposed by using game making tools and open up new possibilities for you (plus the feeling you get when you realize that you have the power to make your computer do whatever you want is quite euphoric). And, should you continue to use GM or Unity, the coding skills you pick up from learning a language properly will be of help.
C#, Java and Python are good languages to start with and there is an over-abundance of good tutorials to get you started with any of them.
If there is one thing that I can assure you is that there is many, many people in your case (me included) who asked the exact same question :D
For starter, there is a little article about where to start : http://www.gamedev.net/page/resources/_/technical/game-programming/your-first-step-to-game-development-starts-here-r2976
In short, aim for something small and go finished project by finished project, even if they are very small. This will give you an accomplishment boost and push you out of depression holes. And don't go posting that you want to do the MMORPG. Ambition is nice but you shouldn't push grandma in the nettles :D
