Depth-VR , A new Virtual-Reality device needs your suggestion!

Greetings gamers, makers and technologist,
This is Sky from Depth VR. For those of you who are not familiar with us, we are a Virtual Reality hardware team based out of Beijing.
?We have absolutely nothing to do with Oculus-Rift !?. We respect what other teams have accomplished but we are bringing new ideas and designs to the VR hardware world.

We are reaching out to you today because we built our devices with you in mind and we want get inputs / feedback from you.


Our device is a display-attached device , an optical tracking device attached to the top of the screen . It tracks your head position, according to the relationship between your eyes and the screen, the 3D effects will be done with subtle adjustments , so you will feel like that you are looking at a Real Object instead of a flat image .

Here is What it is looks like :

The device connects to your computer via a USB cable. You can very easily make your game showing this effect by applying our SDK in your applications. We will release specific development steps in the near future on our facebook page, and it's really simple, please be on the lookout for more exciting updates from DepthVR!

Our SDK now supports multiple 3D-Engines :
1. Unity
2. Ogre
3. Opengl & Direct3D
4. Unreal Engine (under development…)
5. Other popular engines will be supported SOON !

I was involved in making this demo 5 years ago where we started to explore the possibilities of head tracking:

(that one is "fake" though, based on accelerometer)

It would be even better though if it was combined with stereography, then your screen could really look like a window into another world smile.png

thanks , and you are right ! the system Do combines with stereography ... the video was taken from a 5DII with a customized polarized-3D glass , so left-eye-image was filtered to the camera , and once the polarized-3D glass was removed , the camera would see something like this image from our facebook page : https://www.facebook.com/vr.depth

it also supports normal display , too

actually our hardware would be manufactured in ShenZhen.China , the price would be affordable :)

This looks pretty cool!

Should have a lot of potential. If it can be used in 3D shooters for like letting the player look around a corner by just moving his head to the side and similar would be awesome. Quite a different category than Oculus, and much easier to include in a normal computer environment than switching out the monitor completely for a VR headset.

It certainly looks interesting. Like always the questions are robustness, precision and price. If the last one is acceptable I'd certainly give it a try, so let us know the Kickstarter is up!

Can it be used as a regular head-tracker, as an alternative to TrackIR or FreeTrack?

I've been interested in this idea since I first saw Johnny Lee's video about it seven years ago, although I'm guessing it wasn't new then. Like Hodgman, I'm curious about your hardware. Is it a head tracker? Can it do what TrackIR does? Can TrackIR do what your hardware does?

In terms of applications, I'm guessing that the usefulness in gaming is limited. Most 3D games include camera controls, and games that can benefit from six-axis head tracking (mainly flight simulators, in my experience) already support the head-tracking solutions currently on the market. Will your product be better? Will it be cheaper? Will it be easier for developers to work with? Will it be easier for customers to use?

It was a pretty demo, but i missed something.

Tilting of the head to look left/right, maybe even up/down.

(aka changing direction of the user's head, instead of position)

As i see it, the device you guys are creating should, off course, have a few "dedicated" games that take full advantage of it's capabilities.

(i 'll leave it to the enthusiasts to comment further on such games)

But there should also be a bunch of games that are capable of using (some) of it's features, but these games should also be fully playable

without the depth-VR, in this way players will, over time, buy(download?) these games, and start seeing an advantage in buying the depth-VR.

(This is the same principle that most free-to-play games work on)

There are plenty of games that allow looking around a corner(FPS/stealth games) watching from the side(race games) andthere are probably plenty of other examples,

these games work on buttons now, but could off course work through your depth-VR.

Thing is, i don't think the casual player wants to throw his/her head around for (non-dedicated) depth-VR-games to look left/right, but they would rather tilt their head.

(Off course, this is just my opinion, you'd need to do some market research to figure out what players prefer, and whether their preferences would make them buy/not buy your product)

How far is the development of the device btw, is it near completion/ready for production or is there still being worked on ?
