i am ;/ (joke)

there are very many very great programmers (engineers) I often found a blogs of people who do impress me of their great knowledge, we got at least a couple of thousands of it

if i could give the names the little i know i would say "ken Thompson"

who invented b (and b is inner core of c ), also the people who made old elite game (bell /barben) do impress me of their work

It is very interesting to know some interviews of great prgrammers

like that - so if someone could give a names and description i

will very likely read about , for example "elon musk" I never heard about, I will check it up

Jeff Dean!!!!

Obviously.

A) what do you mean by "best"

B) what do you mean by "engineer"?

Musk is probably more of an inspiring leader of a team of engineers than he is an amazing engineer himself.

If we make the dubious decision to include software in our areas of engineering, I'd probably look towards someone like Torvalds. Linux and Git are two pretty impressive accomplishments, in a world where most people fail to achieve even one.

If we make the (probably correct) decision to not include software, then I have no idea. Engineering as a field isn't a rough and tumble world like it was in the days of Brunell. People are too concerned about risk and liability for us to ever see another Tesla or Edison. Mechanical and electrical engineering are extremely dangerous. You're not going to make it far in either field without an in depth education in either, and such an education tends to encourage of culture of minimizing risk these days. You can't just release a patch on a faulty heart shunt.

I apologise for my abrasive comments about JC. I think my sentiment was put across better by other members of this forum.

"A) what do you mean by "best"

B) what do you mean by "engineer"?"

Dictionary definitions should suffice.

Allow me to rephrase:

A) By what metric are you comparing "engineers" by which to be able to rank them against each other?

B) What fields of study do you consider to encompase "engineering"? Should it cover only fields that require certification as an engineer, or are you using the less rigorous version of the term that essentially means "person who makes things"?

So no, dictionary definitions most definitely won't suffice.

A) It's open ended, but you can use influence, industriousness, inventiveness or any metrics you wish.

B) Less rigorous

if engineer = software architect (that's my understanding of what an SW engineer is), then I would guess the best ones (in whatever metrics) are mostly unknown. Most programmers are really just hacking.

This, 100 times this. I've worked with hundreds of coders, software engineers, hackers etc.. and some of them are truely geniuses but, they don't develop operating systems, languages or game engines. They develop games that use the engines, or buisness software that uses the operating systems and languages developed by the other guys. Does them make them less of an engineer? No. Most of them don't want to make waves or become famous they just want to be left alone to create software.

Also with Linus Torvalds, he isn't the only person who worked / works on the Linux Kernal he is just one of many hundreds (thousands?) of software engineers that have contributed. He did have the original idea but, many others helped him.

Are we confusing the term engineer with inventor?
