^ But this is exactly what cube projection does except for detecting co-planarity it rounds the normal direction of faces to one of the +-XYZ axis.

In the example screenshot it would correctly map the whole scene excluding the hill which would still be much more useful than what separating each non-co-planar face cluster into own UV island.
