Indeed, it's sad to see software patents continuing to restrict software development like this. Here we see the chilling effect of software patents, even if the company owning the patent doesn't threaten anything - sometimes filing for a software patent is enough.
I bet it won't be long before it's added back in - I wonder if we'll see any legal battles trying to shut down any so-called "infringing" open source versions of Doom 3 that include Carmack's Reverse?
