I'm agreeing with lazy.
I don't "appreciate" modern games with pixel art. There's nothing appealing to me about it.
I get immediately turned off by pixel art games unless there is something really compelling about them that keeps me playing. I'd rather see programmer art then pixel-art.
Just my personal opinion though....
Can young gamers appreciate the “pixel” art style?
There is always going to be some examples of bad workmanship in any style of art, no matter what you look at.
On the other hand, there is always going to be brilliant examples, too:

Definitely not.
I'm not one of those who is young enough to have grown up with console games. Today's visual art looks way better than 8-bit crap.
Then again, today's gameplay tends to be non-existent. Anyone here old enough to remember what a plot is or how detailed and engrossing the visuals in a text-based rpg could be?
I tend to disagree with this. A lot of pixel games are stupendous. These include Cave story and a lot of games that are in ds and gba or snes.
It may be because of the demographic part that people will change to vector art but pixel art has nothing to do with bad sales.
looking at my cousins, who are very young, they are amazed with 2d games such as kirby and sonic and at the same time enjoy nice looking games like mario galaxy. I think its because they dont consider the technology or the graphics, they just enjoy the game itself. Me, personally, I stopped caring so much about graphics when I realized how awsome games with not so great graphics are. Deadly Premonition is the perfect example. I thought that was an awsome game.
Some amazing 2d games from this generation that are praised for their "pixels" are the ones like the BlazBlue series and such.
so I think 2d will always be appreciated.
I've had a similar experience--my two oldest nephews (ages 7 and 9, or thereabouts) played Super Mario Bros. 3 for the first time not too long ago, and when they were telling me about it, they didn't even mention the graphics. They were just excited about playing "old-school" Mario and had a lot of fun with it. Maybe it's just us old folk (I'm 26) who grew up caring about this stuff who still do. I'd like to think we're getting to the point where one art style isn't necessarily better than the other; they're just different styles, period.
Plus, and not that TOO many people are saying this, but you'd have to be crazy to say that 3D art is necessarily always better than 2D art. I'd take the art style of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game over almost anything from the PS1's era of three-polygon characters any day.

I'm not per se a fan of pixel art. But I really don't like polygon art.. so i like a good 2d game with it's own artstyle. I disliked f.e. gears of war 3 on my fresh and new xbox 360, consider it actually ugly.
art styles are art styles. i like both arts that evolve out of constraints (which is what early pixel art was, as well as 3d in ps1 and n64 days), and art that evolves out of not having those constraints (i can endlessly swim in the demo of crysis, love the water, the sand, the representation of the nature there).
so for me, it's mostly two things: does it look cool by itself, and does it look cool based on what's possible there. lots of 3d games don't fit in there for me.

what i mean is, it takes much effort from the artists side to make me like some polygon based art (be it 2d or 3d). 2d art on the other hand can look pixelated and very lowquality, and i still like it. i, for example, till today never liked ocarina of time for it's graphics. i loved it for everything else, but i had HUGE issues with all the visuals. if the 3d isn't really well done, i don't like it. crysis is one of the realistic games i love (but i don't like, for example, gears of war).
problem is, when pixel art gets lower in quality, it, for me, is still visually pleasing. when 3d art gets lower, it quickly gets "urgh, that is ugly".
obviously, that's different for other people. and i have no problem with that.

I'm only 11 , spent quite a while playing ps2 and the first xbox (also play 360) but I used to play nintendo and sega ALL DAY LONG! They are the best. The only reason I've stopped playing is because they got ruined in a flood, so now I play moder games, but I still play Mario ROMs on my pc, and games like minecraft. Pixel art will always be the god Of gaming. I love it
