I am interested in making a game, but dont know what to make it about because everyone has their own opinion. What type of game would you prefer? 2D or 3D? Free Roam or Linear? FPS or RPG? As well as think of anything else you would want in a game. I dont plan on making exactly what is thrown at me. I just want some ideas smile.gif
Make the simplest game for which you have relevant skills yet seems worth making and a lot of fun to make.

But me personally, I'd really like something like Plant Tycoon, Fish Tycoon, and Pocket Frogs which is a single-player game for windows (optionally other systems, just not something only for phones or ipad and no mandatory multiplayer. :P ) Of course I'd also like an MMO with a long list of expensive-to-implement features and a world I actually want to spend time in. Or an AAA quality adventure game or RPG involving puzzles and a story a 30 year old woman can appreciate. Honestly for 90% of game genres I could imagine something I'd want to play, even when I don't usually like that genre; that's just a basic part of being a game designer.

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.

Oh this is a hard one. In answer to your specific questions I prefer 3D over 2D most of the time. I like free roaming but understand it doesn't work in a lot of games. I enjoy most genres the only ones I tend not to are sports and racing (although that isn't set in stone).

Is there anything I want in a game? Well the answer to that question is way to long for a forum post. It varies a lot between genres and because of that i don't really have a top ten things I love to see in games list.

Sorry I couldn't be more help, i may be able to give more concrete answers if you tell me what exactly your budget/skills are. In the end if you are the one wanting to make the game then it should be whatever game you want to make. I wouldn't use other peoples ideas or preferences simply because it wont be yours which will make it a lot harder to stick with the project when things get tough. Getting input about the game is great (and essential later one) but at the start its probably best that you make a game for yourself than for others.

I prefer open world 3d rpg games with an immersive game world. Now, it doesn't need to be 100% open world, but it should be fairly open world. Oh, and no loading screens when entering houses. Should be part of the "world".
In Gothic 2 (my favourite game), there are 2 main areas (loading zones). Khorinis, and the Valley of Mines (part of khorinis).
In chapter 2 you have to go to the valley of mines, and chapter 3 starts when you return (after completing chapter 2 objectives) to Khorinis.
The more dangerous animal types have come out from "the pass" (connecting Khorinis and the valley), making it more dangerous. Cloaked dark magicians (with dark voices) patrol the roads, looking for you, and several other things have happened. Chapter 3 is situated in the same place as chapter 1, but more things have been added. You're also able to go to some of the places you couldn't go before.
Rather than going from place to place, you're like on an island, and much of the stuff is happening around the "centers" (town or other important locations), but there are certain locations spread around where it is only meant that you go later. In the beginning travelling off the roads could be a no no, later you explore more and more, while the main areas and roads connecting it, might introduce lots of new content. You could have one main town, and make it really dense, and a large part of the story in any chapter. This could also give you a great sense of advancement as you could start like a nobody, and work yourself up to someone powerful. The tavern bully that once kicked you out, will later learn to avoid you.
Don't you have your favourite genre as a player? Why not making the kind of game you like to play yourself? This almost always yelds the best outcome...

Stellar Monarch (4X, turn based, released): GDN forum topic - Twitter - Facebook - YouTube

Open -ended MMO Strategy game that does not have any care bear rules to protect the weak, something similar to Eve Online.

End of the day, ask yourself what you really wanted to play and start on it, that's how I keep going even after so many years on it :)
