Why do we have to have FB 'like' buttons to vote on a post? Aaprt from anything else, the fact that GD's 'like' button actuall doesn't have anything (does it?) to do with Facebook is potentially confusing. And it shows favoritism towards Facebook which could be daft if Google+ splits the ecosystem.

Why would it have anything to do with Facebook? It doesn't look like the Facebook button and sits next to a "dislike" button which Facebook doesn't have an equivalent for. What do you think it should say instead - "^ this"?

I can't see a dislike button?

All I see is this:

For the love of god, please tell me that you've just omitted your error checking code for brevity, and you don't really assume that all those functions succeed.
There is an actual Facebook "like" button at the end of the page though.

  • ++(*this);
  • MOAR!
  • Anything except 'like'

If you see the amount of advice given to people to make their own characters, their own games, not to copy from others - yet in this it is hard to think that gamedev.net would have picked 'like' for any reason other than its Facebook association.

Some users have access to a red negative thumb. I don't know the hueristics/voodoo involved in this decision.
There was a discussion a few months back after the board changed over.

http://www.gamedev.n...ive-reputation/

The actual voodoo is in the code, but from the discussion the consensus was along these lines:

* Add a nice red "Disagree" button back in as well -- but only for users who themselves have a reputation over a certain threshold (say 50 for example) -- this way random newbies and trolls will generally not have access to the negative functionality, but it will still be in place for more knowledgeable members. Whatever the threshold value is should be high enough to not be achievable with only a couple of funny off-topic posts, but should be low enough to be reasonably easy for a genuinely helpful member to attain in a relatively short period of time. "Disagreeing" with posts should lower reputation.
There was also discussion about the names to use, and ultimately there was so much chatter on it that people agreed it didn't really matter what it was called. "Give a cookie" and "smack down" were one; "Right" and "Wrong" were discussed, along with a whole bunch of other options. Does it really matter? You click the up or "+" button and the post gets marked up and their reputation improves. You click the down or "-" button and the post gets marked down and their reputation decreases.

If you don't like the button images you can easily modify it with your own custom style sheet. The style classes are rep_up and rep_down.

No similarity at all... of course before FB we never "liked" posts or pages, but it's still a coincidence and there is literally no other way to vote for posts.

The most likely future is that we will shift to a system where you answer the question: Was this post helpful? Yes / No

It will not be turned on for forums like the lounge.

I like this.

But I do think the thumb logo is a bit much. That's probably the part that makes it most facebook-esque.

Or alternatively, keeping the thumb but removing "like" would have the same effect for me -- it's the combination of 'thumbs up' + 'like' that makes it FBesque. But perhaps being FBesque was a deliberate choice...
Up votes are fine, though I'm always a bit concerned with negative posts - it doesn't matter whether you limit who has access, there's still a temptation for people to dish them out not for say bad behaviour or incorrect information, but just for disagreeing (especially in debaty topics that you're more likely to get in the Lounge). In some ways, limiting who has it can be worse, as now person A can downvote person B's view in a debate, but not vice versa. To be fair, it's not too bad here as most people in a debate seem not to use downvotes, but I do see it often enough.

Slashdot had an interesting idea in that the amount of votes you had was very limited - it forced you to use your votes wisely, rather than voting up and down everyone depending on your view (though even there, on Slashdot, down moderation was often abused).

And whatever the threshold is, it's more than 50, as I'm still not seeing this button :)

The Facebook like is a separate matter altogether - one criticism I'd make is it's not clear what I would be liking (the thread? Gamedev.net as a whole?). (Nor is it clear what gets broadcast to Facebook based on what I click here, but that's more a criticism of Facebook I guess...)
