Visual Studio version and SDL

AFAIK libraries are not compatible between Visual Studio versions. ie. a library built with VC 2005 can not be linked in VC 2008.

Why then do the SDL libraries (from this page http://www.libsdl.org/download-1.2.php) that are built with VC 2005 work when linked in VC 2008? (and presumably VC 2010 as well according to lazyfoo)

I'm glad they do work, but anyone know why?
I think I found the answer if anybody's interested:
