Dragon Breeder- Idea
Dragon Breeder- This is just a simple game design idea. This may sound like one of those cheap Japanese animation game boy games. But actually this would be on a better graphic system such as the GameCube or X box, or possibly just on the PC. This might not be a new and different game idea but it’d be fun to play and would be a great play for those who are dragon fans. The game’s RPG style would be similar to Threads of Fate on Play Station (the game where you experiment with monsters and can take the form of the monster/creature) mixed sort of with the Monster Rancher type gameplay.This game probably wouldn’t appeal to most older teens, or then again maybe it could with it’s Medieval Fantasy Roleplay touch. But who knows…Anyways, why not have a game where you breed dragons. The setting is in a medieval fantasy realm. On a small ranch, there lives a boy, Kuru, he lives with his great uncle Chester. His uncle introduces him to an egg, not just a normal egg but a dragon egg. As the egg hatches, out comes Kuru''s first dragon, A Swavanain RedOak dragon. Kuru nurtures and takes care of the dragon over time. Finally the dragon reaches breeding age. Fascinated by the dragon, Kuru rides out on him in search of a mate for the Swavanain RedOak dragon which he calls as FireLoon as a nickname. The first part of the game is searching throughout the fantasy realm, and finding a mate for FireLoon. You go through fighting enemies with FireLoon with what variety of fire moves and tail and wing moves you have, till finally you reach Zaban Lake, where you can pick from 7 types of dragons to breed with FireLoon. The 7 picks are the Yellow Crested Nal, Zabanian Spike Ridge, CoarseHaired Venn, Manitoban Ridge Back, Blue tipped thornhunn, Basic green dragon, and FireWinged Serpent. The choice is up to the player. Once picked, Kuru attempts to fly back to his Uncle''s house, but then he hears a cry throughout the air, the sound of a woman. He flies on FireLoon, with player''s choice dragon beside him. Fly off towards the sound and as they reach where the sound is coming from, then they all come to a screeching halt when a blast emerges out of a nearby building (appearing to be a fortress). The beam lunges towards Kuru and his two dragons. The beam hits in front of them knocking the 2 dragons, and Kuru down into the trees of a dense forest. They wake up in an old cottage, the cottage of an old man. The old man explains how Kuru winded up there. The old man heals the dragon and Kuru and also gives him some background on the princess (the crying out woman),and how she has been captured by an evil Dark- Magic Wizard by the name of Lothirahan. Kuru does not get much details about Lothirahan’s fortress but does get info about the spiteful Lothirahan himself. Then Kuru sets off in Search of the princess, the princess''s name is VanderHeart. As you make it back to the fortress where you had been blasted at. Kuru makes his way to the entrance and finds it to be rather well gaurded. You continue forth up the entrance but you are instantly warded off by the curses and gaurds. Kuru realizes the place is to well gaurded. Kuru must gain more strength before coming back. Kuru loses hope,knowing he is too weak. Just as Kuru mounts his dragon and is ready to head back to the ranch, Kuru stumbles upon a hooded man that had protruded from a dark patch of woods. The man looks similar to a holy man or monk. The wise man sees Kuru’s trouble and gives him some advice. Kuru then gains confidence from the man and learns his destiny. Kuru must breed more dragons. He must breed more dragons to become stronger. His elite force of dragons would help him conquer over Lothirahan. The more dragons he would breed the stronger his force would get. He goes out in search of dragons of all kinds throughout the many landscapes that lye about the fantasy world.From there on you will fight enemies on the way of your quest, retrieve items, and fight to capture and breed diffrent combinations of dragons you find on the way, and collect dragons eggs that are soon to hatch. Note: Only 7 dragons can be equipped at a time during battle. The dragons will learn many awesome techniques along the way such as, regular Fire Breath, ice powers, poisonous moves, and your basic Fantasy Moves and many many many more that’d you would expect to be in a Role play game. All the same rules will apply with HP and PP etc. You will have all the Essentials that’d you find in a normal RPG. You will fight in over 18 different landscapes ranging from snowy mountain tops to a volcanic inferno. When fighting, you will fight in a party .For instance, like in final fantasy, when you get in battle, Barret and the other guys will be right by you in the match. You get the main idea! When in non-fighting mode, Kuru can choose to be in flying mode (flying on the dragon) or to walk with the dragon(s) behind him. The whole premises of the game is to fight, battle, and experiment with dragon and gain enough power with your collected force of dragons to destroy Lothirahan. Agh! Sounding a bit too much like that game Pokemon! If you like the sound of this game, please tell me! :-) Didn’t put much detail into it, so it probably doesn’t sound so thrilling right now! Sounds dumb? Heh,wouldn’t be surprised as the idea is not new and refreshing. Just a top of the head thing to post out on the forum. Well thanks for the time in reading this. Probably wondering why I put it out if it was not detailed and just at the top of my head…well, just wanted to pitch in some idea for the sake of it. This might be worth making as a game!

Well, breeding dragons is cool IMO, but maybe we can be a little more creative with it than taking over a country and rescuing a princess. How about: the player is the dragon, the game starts when you hatch as a rather boring wingless lizzard with only 2 or 3 attacks, but as you advance the plot of the game and complete various quests you evolve yourself (like EVO if you''ve ever played it) and the evolution gives you new attacks. I''m tinking this would be most fun with a mortal kombat or Yoshi''s island RT fighting environment, rather than a typical RPG turn-based one. The rast of the game could be RPGish though. Or more like an adventure game maybe.
Of course you would have to have a good original story to go with this, but that shouldn''t be too hard, there are so many writers begging for work in the helpwanted forum. You could have a contest to see who could come up with the best story. I would enter.

I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.

I like your idea! I think i''ll go with what you said. I like the image of starting out as a dragon and playing as the dragon mainly than just playing as a small boy named Kuru. How about Kuru ties in with the story somehow, for instance maybe the hatchling happens to be exploring and he runs into the ranch Kuru is on. Kuru spots the hatchling and takes care of him for a bit giving him food and etc. The dragon becomes a friend of the boy. Well after the dragon and Kuru get familiar and all, the dragon adventures on out,leaving the ranch, and give Kuru a goodbye. Later on in the story the dragon finds out that his friend he had met (Kuru) has been kidnapped by someone or some thing. So one act of adventure is to scout out the boy and find his location. You get Kuru on your back safely once you find him.But of course the kidnapper tries to stop you. The kidnapper mounts on his dragon to go after you. This would be a good chase act, and you ride the dragon trying to avoid to run into anything or getting attacked by the kidnapper as he flies after you in a rushing frenzy. ....Or maybe i should just leave this to some writers for a better idea. Well i will post a topic in the helpwanted section to see who comes up with the best story. Oh yeah..and adventure style like Yoshi''s Island does sound good. How about it would be in that style just mixed with the regular Role Playing style, that might be interesting outcome possibly? Thanks for the suggestions.
Say, did you ever see the movie Dragonheart ? it introduced the notion that dragons were actually good creatures whose cosmic purpose was to protect man as he learned the world. Dragons were pseudo-immortal; when they died physically, their souls were either accepted into the Congregation of Elders, which were the stars, or dissipated into the void.
One dragon gave half his heart to save the life of a young prince, who was the protege of a valiant knight. However, the boy grew to be an evil and despotic ruler, and the knight believed it was the dragon''s heart that poisoned the boy. Thus, he started a quest to rid the earth of all dragons. He very nearly succeeded. The beauty of the story was that man, by and large, was ignorant of the true nature of dragons and therefore feared them as evil beings. To tie this to your idea, your dragon could be born to protect man. Unfortunately, man is afraid of dragons. (For dramatic effect, you could be the last of your kind).
Your objective could be to fulfill all your quests (assigned by the Elders) and be accepted into the Congregation when you eventually die. Kuro could be the one human who learned the truth about dragons and tires to help you. Of course, the people will declare him demon-possessed and will constantly run away from him and/or try to kill him.
Just some thoughts.

Hmm evolving the dragon over time, that sounds similar to the SNES game EVO. Evolving different parts of the body. Potential definitely, you need a deeper reason IMHO for the player to play the game. Fighting over and over gets repetitive even if you are advancing the story. You need the people playing it to become emotionally involved with the main characters too.
If you can get hold of it - its out of print - there''s a book by Jack Vance, "The Dragon Masters" that deals with a war between two nobles, both of whom fight using armies of dragons they have bred. It might give you some ideas to flesh out the storyline.

What if the player as the dragon must grow in power and skill over time, and only wakes from deep hibernation when there is a problem in the world. You stay out of hibernation until you are able to solve the problem in the current period you have awaken in.
During any given period, there could be basic things to do, such as hook up with a human sorcerer or sorceress to help you with your task. A really good sorcerer could last across 2 of the dragons hibernations, but alas, humans can not live very long, so there will often be the need to find a new one..., and of course you would have to be careful with who is chosen, because they might want simply to gain control over you.
Every time the dragon completes a quest, it is overcome with fatigue and hibernates for 500 or 600 years. When it awakens, the world has changed. It could start in the age before dinosaurs and go through time to the equivalent of the year 4000 or so.
I imagine when the dragon is small , it is sent to earth from some homeworld that it is drawn to , but is not able to get back to, because it does not yet have the power to go back. It must accomplish the advancement of life on the planet and keep the life from destroying itself until such time as it has enough power to be able to leave, which happens to coincide with the time that the life of the planet has advanced enough that there is not the threat that it could wipe itself out.
Subsequent games could be about the dragon reaching its homeworld and being sent to battle the opposing force in the universe, the Failed Ones. It might turn out that every dragon comes from the same homeworld, and each must create, protect and promote life on the planet it is assigned to. If they fail, they are not allowed to return to their homeworld. All the failed dragons have created a dark lifeless world of their own, and have decided to eliminate the existence of life planets and the "Compleats" (the dragons that have succeded in their mission of life).
