I keep getting flashbacks of an old game I played a looong looong time ago and had a lot of fun with. So long ago that memories become hazy, uncertain, and shrouded in a thick grey mist. I hope you guys can help me find it, or if not perhaps a modern version of something similar!
All I remember about it is spawning on a large 2D map as a Mage and running around in an environment that had treasure chests and monsters to fight and many rooms, dungeons, gardens, and corridors. What made it so special for me tho was it was fully open PvP! Lots of other players running around as Archers, Warriors, Mages, etc all fighting each other. You dropped all your loot when you died for another player to pick up, or yourself if you got back in time. And the combat was really fun! Fast paced, though not too fast paced, (not a spam fest like Diablo) and with fun, nice looking spells to use.
I remember that you didn't spawn as a ghost. You spawned as your character.
The gear you could pick up made you more powerful, and I can't remember if it had levelling or skilling up or not. There was also gold, so there must have been some use for the gold though I don't remember what.
Looking for an old game...

That could be like a million games. Ultima Online?
You have to give more details. When was this? I'm assuming PC?

Yeah it was on the PC. I don't think it was Ultima Online because it was a more fast paced and simpler game I think. I don't think there were things such as crafting in it. Plus I didn't pay to play it. So either it was a demo/trial version I was playing or it was free to play. Also I remember that you didn't spawn as a ghost. You spawned as your character.
Wish I could give more details, but I don't remember much more.
Meridian 59?
The game was 2d so it can't have been that. But I googled Meridian 59 and it looks worth checking out for sure!

Wonder if there are still any MP servers for it?
No idea, I never played it online. I just have hazy memories of the game, like you, only with the name in addition

At first, I was sure he was talking about "Gauntlet", running around as a mage, 2D, top down, with warriors, archers, etc. And, he said "old" I can't say a game made in 2000 is "old"
Ahh, what fun memory of Gauntlet. "Mage needs food!"
