good tutorail for making PNG's with alpha channel

im having to use a quad for particle system , its stated in uni project . the skins are PNG format , im assuming using these cause these have an alpha channel<br />

are PNG the best format for quads that have an alpha channel ?<br />
<br />
and is there a good tutorail to make these , you can point me towards please . so when i export out of photoshop to a PNG it has the alpha channel <br />
<br />
need the alpha channel to see through parts of it
