Have Side Scrolling Games Gone the Way of the Dodo?
I''d play a good 2d side scrolling game. In fact, if you were one of the very lucky people who has a dev kit and a license to make gameboy anvance games, you could sell 2d side scrollers by the bushel (and make them that fast too!)
For pc though... People will probably play it, atleast some, but I doubt anyone would buy it though.

It depends. If you''re going to cut back on the graphics you need a really cool concept. Castlevania for the PS was a side scroller. Every Mario is still a classic just because it plays so well and it''s interesting.

I still think there are enough people out there who would love to play a great side scroller. If you follow the threads of any of the messages asking "What''s your all time favorite game?" you will see many people remembering classics like R-Type and so on.
I believe there is still a market out there. It''s just lucky for indie developers that the big companies have forgotton all about side scrollers.
If the game is good, people will play it.

I personally still like the 2D platform sidescroller games. One of my favorite games of all time is Super Metroid for the SNES. I was disappointed that they decided to make the next Metroid game (Metroid Prime) a 3D first person shooter (which looks really cool now). I think both computers and consoles today could handle some very cool 2d games, there just aren''t any. I plan to eventually make a 2d engine in dx8 and make what Metroid should have been , I call it Zetroid, starring Iamus Sram...maybe not.

I for one still get a kick out of side-scroller shoot-em ups. I''m in the middle of developing one as we speak (the Engine is complete, now it''s just a matter of designing levels, getting good graphics, and more enemy functions). I''ve had a helluva time developing it too. So, I think it''s still alive and kicking.
Also, if any of you want to contribute some graphics (backgrounds, enemies, bullets with animations, etc.) let me know!

Hmm. I never heard anyone use the word dildo to describe reputations of games.

I like side scrolling games. Truthfully, I don''t play much of them anymore because they are usually for children under 10, but I think if theres a story line invloved, and nice graphics(like super mario brother, I mean, you cant have 3D graphics in a side scrolling game really, I dont think) you could probably get away with it. It wont be a Diablo 2 but I am sure you don''t expect that
