Benot Mandelbrot R.I.P.
One of my first working graphical programs was a mandelbrot set renderer. R.I.P.

">Zoom to e228. I found this utterly amazing. A deep, deep zoom on the mandelbrot fractal all the way to e228. When you hit the original pattern you realise that infinity is fucking huge...
I've never done acid. But I think if I did, and I looked at that, I would achieve enlightenment. Math is poetry.
Yann L, I think the demo 'stargazer' has a real time fractal - i think the one that look like a borg cube in 3D (or Razor 1911 logo if remade in 2D). i can't remember much, or the technique behind it - maybe they made a short-cut or pre-compute to make it real time.
yeah, fractal is one of the earliest graphical thing that i do, too. this is due to a circle, square, and filler is after a while is boring. besides, future crew 'panic' has factral zoomer and 3d fractal mountain.
fractal is a good way to get nice gfx through mathematical means.
RIP.

I always found fractals to be absolutely fascinating. They show the inherent beauty in mathematics in a really unique way. Lots of modern procedural rendering techniques would not have been possible without Mandelbrots' work.
Farewell.

Our last DS game had gaMandelbrot in the code (Although since it was never used, the linker stripped it). I was surprised it actually worked with the DS's 19.12 fixed point maths...

lol?
[size="2"]I like the Walrus best.
What's crazy is that I was watching his TED2010 talk not that long ago, which I reckon was his last talk anywhere. I hope I can remain that technical when and if I reach that age.
Almost every programmer does a Mandelbrot set renderer every now and then. It's almost a "hello world" for a graphics layer [smile].
Thanks Benoît.

Thanks Benoît.

Inspired by this thread, I wrote a blog entry on the subject on my webpage. It includes a couple of the videos posted in this thread and a few others that I found to be fascinating on the web. I'm not really a technically minded person, so feel free to rip away at any stuff I might've got wrong :).
