Does anyone know of any colonisation or colonisation era games that arent 4x or RTS? An RPG where you play a settler or something would be an example.
It's a time I've always been interested in and think it's a bit under represented.

Here's 3 examples I can think of:

American Conquest: Fight Back
Colonisation (obviously :P)
Age of Empires 3

Obviously these are all RTS/ 4x which is genre I love but a new take would be welcome....
Which "Colonization Era"? There have been a lot of them from a lot of different groups throughout time.

Currently I'm working away at a project that is focused on a Norse style colonization that is a hybrid game. You will have your focus character(s), a single core family that you have direct control over, and then you have to lead a group of settlers out into a generated world and try to survive.

It is very much a tangent to your topic, but what kind of features would you expect to see in a good colonization game?

Holy S**t!

The game you just described is pretty much exactly my idea. I was thinking more about North/ Central American colonisation in the 15, 16th centuries, but the ideas of having a core player, a directly controllable group and a greater population is exactly the same.

My version was deeply RPG-ish, and would probably be alot of work (I'm no programmer, but it would probably have to be a commercial game because no Indie group could feasibly throw it together).

The idea was you were the original settlers of a randomly generated island in ~1490. The island would be based on All of North and Central America with different stylised areas (A northern area, jungle area, desert area, surrounding archipegalos).

If you want I could PM you my ideas, beacuse I don't see myself doing anything about this in the near future.

On topic, I was thinking about non-RTS/4X games that have colonisation in them in any way. Period, genre etc were not concerns. It was a breadth first search so I wasn't too bothered about specifics.

An ideal colonisation game for me would involve survival as one of the main challenges and diplomacy between the different groups and the natives.
Optional is the drive for independance late-game. Depends on the genre to be honest.
I've put up a new thread in the game design forum. Mostly a repost of an older thread I started to fish for new ideas. So feel free to post any ideas there.

Imperialism I and II. Imperialsm II is the best of the bunch IMO. Epic score is just gravy.
Haven't played it so I'm not sure if it qualifies but Hinterlands might be close to what you're looking for.

Hinterlands seems kinda cool, but the wiki description doesn't do it any favours. I'll look into it. Thanks for replying.
Conquest of the New World is a relatively old turn-based strategy game about European colonization. I used to play it all the time on my old Mac.

It obviously doesn't have what you're looking for, but a lot of people don't know about the game's existence.
