Does anyone enjoy these anymore? I've been a huge fan of simple graphic / text-based games all my life, and have wanted to make one for a long time now, but it seems they've been dwindling in popularity. Some games that come to mind are:

LORD
Trade Wars
Scorched Earth (not text-based, but very simple graphics)

Anyone else a fan of these (or anything similar)?

Something like http://khanwars.com ? (i'm actually advertising right now :D )

And yeah - there's still big community base for these kind of games but on my(!) opinion it's slowly dying. We're living in dynamic gaming and text-based web browser games can't give the end-user enough dynamic action to satisfy his needs. Maybe the right technology for web gaming is flash (later html 5.0). Just 'PHP' looks boring for the gamers.

What do YOU think ?

I'm still a huge fan and I think there are still just as many fans of the genre. But the overall noise factor from all forms of online entertainment has made it more difficult and expensive to build up your core playerbase for a browser-based game.
Dude, I still have dreams of creating an RPG in the vein of LORD and Exitilus!

This is also my Dream.... But I have tried for years to make it happened and I never got anywhere. Alas.

It lies! It says "This is a browser-based game — you don't need to download anything!", but when I open it, network traffic largely increases!!1

If you have enough content and constantly evolving content these games still have huge potential. Just look at Mafia Wars and similar games. With the growth of social games you now have a larger potential audience than ever before... there's also more saturation... but if your game is good enough and you get a little bit (A LOT) of luck you can succeed more than ever!
