What are the disadvantages of using Windows 2000 for game development compared to using Windows ME or Windows 98? Is Windows 2000 an outgrowth of Windows NT or does it have a different parentage?
I would argue that it doesn''t have any disadvantages .
Windows 2000 = NT5. It is infinitely more stable than Win9x. It is much faster, especially at multitasking. It offers real security and real memory protection. It has flawless DX and OpenGL support. Conclusion: it''s so much better than Win9x in every way that you would be crazy not to use it .

this is how I would rank them, from worse to best

Win98, WinME, Win98SE, Win2K
that is from what I experienced in stability
Win2K shows its true power only when you have a
strong computer (say on AMD TBIRD 900, 256MhzRAM...)
on P200MMX, 128MBRAM Win98SE is definately MUCH better

So for developemnt use Win2K, it is rock stable, for
testing use everything, coz every windblowz could behave
quite differently.
