Activision Allows King's Quest Fan Project

It sounds like Activision has changed their minds and are now going to allow the fan-made King's Quest: The Silver Lining to be released.

I wish they would've kept to their guns. This will continue to encourage the lack of creativity within the community.

I'm not sure where you are going with this.

The whole point was they had gone through the proper channels once and gotten permission to release their product. It was Vivendi's absorption into Activision that screwed things up for them.

Now I have a feeling this is one of the things Activision is doing to try and improve their image.

So it's only 'creativity' if it's based on public domain works-- not currently under copyright? Very little of what's been made for decades, if anything, is completely not derivative. In a more relevant example, King's Quest included a plethora of fantasy/mythology creatures (Medusa, Pandora, etc).

So a group of dedicated and hard-working fans who had worked under the good graces of the previous IP holder should have all their work (the game was very nearly complete to my understanding) go to naught over a corporate merger and fans of the series should be denied a high-quality, if non-official, sequel that can only benefit the current IP holder by keeping the property in the public eye for no cost to them, and possibly also serve as impromtu market research that might lead to an official sequel? Because you think its not original enough?

Most ideas are not entirely original, and while its generally advisable that teams create their IP on their own, there's nothing wrong with a fan project operating with the blessing of the IP holders.

I imagine that this is Activision responding to community pressure more than anything, so good on them for not defaulting to their usual tactics.

From what I remember of the last thread, they only got their 'contract' after being shut down the first time.

Personally, I'm not a fan of it. Go make your own IP and branding, don't rip off the work of someone else.

It's creativity in the indie market that sells. You are unaware like most 'WoW MMoRpGzeR dEvs'. Have fun competing with the AAA market =)

Please go check the steam indie market list and tell me just how many of those games are derived from the main stream.

No, it's quite immature to copy ones work. They need to grow up and face the consequences of building an ip from the ground up.
