I'm writing this in an airplane on a layover in Las Vegas, where Sprint has 4G coverage. I got a free Sprint EVO 4G at Google I/O today, and I'm getting a solid 8Mbps over wifi tethering with one bar of 4G signal. This thing is pretty incredible. Just had to gloat. Carry on.

I'd consider upgrading from my 3G if it weren't for the bloody 5GB caps.

Sprint charges an extra $10/month "premium data" fee if you get their 4G phone (making total $25/month data cost). They justify this by lifting the 5GB/month limit. So no caps I can see anywhere.

Interesting. Their data-only plans cost the same for 3G and 3/4G, although the later still has the cap on 3G and off-network use (and that silly $50/GB overage on the 3G network which makes the thought of lending the modem out to, say, my mother, a disturbing thought at best -- 5GB is nothing to, say, anyone who visits youtube regularly)

I tried out the 4G capability here in Sweden (Stockholm), and generally speeds were over 50 Mbps, sometimes up to 80-95 Mbps. With pings in the 30 ms range to google, which is very impressive since that's the same time I at home. However since it's double the price of the regular 3G offering I'm not really jumping at it yet since there is only coverage inside the city itself.

@BeanDog: I heard that the battery life was atrocious on 4G with the EVO (only a few hours from a full charge). What has your experience been?

I can't speak for 4G, since that coverage isn't in Salt Lake until later this year. But on 3G, it's great. I can sync with a Google account and a Facebook account, have Google Talk running all day, run Pandora a few hours on my commute, and get some turn-by-turn spoken directions, and the battery's still going at night. It's a 1500mAh battery, which is not fantastic, but it's better than most cell phone batteries.

AH, I want a 4G EVO pretty bad, my no-G blackberry is really showing it's age.

It comes out on June 4th around here, I must have one...
