Yeah you really have to be more specific because there are over 10 top place in California alone IMO:
SF (it might get bashed for being gay but I've never met anyone that didn't enjoy visting SF),
LA (can spend entire vacation just doing stuff there, universal, disneyland, venice, etc),
SD (Seaworld, TJ, etc),
Yosemite
Tahoe
Sequoia
Death Valley
Monterey
Catalina Islands
Pismo
etc

New Orleans, except during Mardi Gras.

It's only a part of the USA politically speaking. Culturally, it's in its own little laid-back decadent world. Bring an umbrella.

The beaches there will soon be quite lovely... spill, baby, spill.

I stayed there before the last two major disasters, but I'd recommend it too. Nice people, great culture, very good food. And the weeks before Mardi Gras are still fun (parades, music) if you don't like big drunken crowds.

I've got a buddy who lives there. I'm not bashing the place, just saying that right now spending time on Bourbon Street beats spending time on the oil slicked bayou. Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Skiing: Park City, UT

Mountain Biking: Moab, UT

Beaches: San Diego, CA (La Jolla beach is incredible, but crowded in high season)

Amusement Parks: Six Flags in various places, HersheyPark in central PA, and of course Disney World/Land in Florida/California

Theater: Broadway, in NYC
Outer Banks in North Carolina is great. It's a beach area with a ton of light houses.
I'm quite biased here, but you have to check out San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego in California.

I've travelled almost everywhere in the US by car, here are some of my favorites, in travellable order:
...
4. Manhattan Beach, CA
Damn tourists! Go away! ;)

I work in this city daily. It's a nice spot but if you've seen Venice, you've pretty much seen this place too.

I just like the people/atmosphere at Manhattan better. Venice is a freak show, Manhattan has more people just hanging out and having a good time. Plus I like walking on The Strand and seeing all the expensive houses right on the beach.

Forgot that one, big second on that. Chincoteague is interesting too, beautiful island with a ton of wild horses.
