If you could get permission to remake a game, what would it be?
Hasn't Fire Emblem already been remade on practically every Nintendo system?

Also, Conflict: Middle East. It was hard as holy hell, but was great - political simulators :)
Great game, Never beat it though :(
Check out hidden agenda, it's a pretty good nation sim to :D

Magic Carpet :)
The game that inspired me to learn 3d programming.
I'm still amazed by the quality/performance ratio on these games. Realtime water reflections, lighting, deformable terrain, all realtime on 486/P1 CPUs without hardware acceleration. Amazing!
[OpenTK: C# OpenGL 4.4, OpenGL ES 3.0 and OpenAL 1.1. Now with Linux/KMS support!]

But there are so many things they could have done with it instead of what they actually did. ^^;
Actually... maybe it'd be more interesting to make a Pokemon tactics game.
I'm stuck between Wing Commander (2, 3, 4, 1 in that order), and Homeworld.

If I got the chance to remake x-com I'd prefer it as a low budget indie production rather than a AAA setup.
That's already been done: http://ufoai.sourceforge.net/?page=Home

I already played it, its fairly well made but I'm a bit disappointed that they scrapped destructible terrain and fog of war for 3d graphics. If they ever finish it I'll probably try playing it again though.
