Now, how about that strangulation problem when you forget you're wearing headphones and you walk away from your desk?

Wireless headphones?

You can't strangle anyone with wireless headphones though and in the professional workplace this is a valuable weapon to have, even if it is just for threatening purposes. On a more serious note, maybe it is the way you take them off and put them down, maybe you are adding a half-turn every time you do this?

Sure you can -- you just have to use the headband. Rather, you want to use the headband anyways for increased tensile strength. That said, you do lose your ability to lash them to their chair and force them to watch Rick Astely videos.
I have this exact same problem. My cable seems to be kind of cheap, and I've gotten quite a few breaks in the insulation on it that I had to scotch tape up because of this :/

This is why telephone handset cords (remember those?) were pigtailed. Of course, they still twist and get tangled if you have teenage daughters. Get them mobile phones, it will solve that problem.

Random side note on this point. They were actually pigtailed for compactness and to reduce the risk of tripping while not being as limiting. The pigtail was a spring to pull the cord in and up off the floor.

There is actually talk of requiring homes with land lines to include at least one standard corded phone for emergency reasons. Often power can be out while communication lines function, but the vast majority of cordless phones have no way to operate without power, and homes without a corded phone are becoming the majority.
