Softening hard edges in 3DS Max
I'm going for this kind of effect:
The modifier I use is TurboSmooth. As I understand it, to make it smooth only very close to the edge, you have to add some vertices close to it too, so it doesn't smooth all over the surface. The closer those vertices are, the smaller the 'round corner' radius is. Anyway, I've tried several things. The picture I demonstrated was done by tesselating the whole cube some, then smoothing. I'm not happy with brutally increasing the polycount like that though. I have succeded in reproducing the same thing by carefully adding vertices close to the edge, but it's too much work. So I thought I could just apply the 'Inset' modifier to all polygons. That should work, but unfortunately for reasons I don't quite understand but must have something to do with how Smoothing understands the topology, the result is not what I want, again it smooths the whole surface, resulting in something closer to a spheroid.
Anyway, anyone know of any automatic or semi-automatic way to quickly soften those edges in any model, without manually adding vertices? Thanks in advance.
A fast way how you can do that is:
- Select all the edges of the object (in editable poly mode!)
- then do a chamfer (below extrude) with as many segments as you like. The more segments the smoother are the rounded edges
Some modifier would be better though because then you can undo the rounded edges, but I don't know of any. Just add an edit poly modifier and then do the chamfer so you can easily undo the effect by deleting the edit poly modifier....
Hope this helps
