Dust Off
Hi again,
I really need to clean my computer, and I don't have an anti-static vacuum or other way to clean it, so I bought a can of Dust Off. The thing is, the can says not to use it in confined spaces, such as a trash can or paper shredder. I would consider a computer to be a pretty confined space. Does anyone here use Dust Off to clean the inside of their computer?
Thanks
Do it in an open space and you'll be fine. Apparently you can get high off of it or die? wikipedia article. It's used for cleaning computer stuff so I assume it's somewhat safe.
Usually I just use compressed air, and I remove most of the components and clean them seperately. Dust Off should be fine, just do it near an open window if you're concerned.
The main thing to be careful of is that you need to be sure it has dried and dissipated before turning the computer back on (ideally, before you even plug it back in to the mains). Anti-dust chemicals tend to be fairly flammable, so sparks don't mix well with them [wink]
As long as you let the box sit and air out for a couple of minutes, you'll be fine. I use stuff like that all the time with no problems.

I just use the vacuumcleaner, if youve installed the PC hardware correctly there should be no issues, dont suck up any wires though :)
the only trouble is some fans still will have dust sticking to them that the cleaner cant shift, in which case a cloth is required

Don't do that, it might cause static electricity and kill something.
Dust Off is perfectly fine as long as your windows are open when you use it; you don't wanna breathe that stuff in [grin]. And as ApochPiQ mentioned, make sure you let things air off for a bit before you plug them back in. The reverse is also true, don't turn off the computer and immediately dust it because the heatsinks and other components will still be pretty hot.
