capturing sounds playing

I''m wondering if there are any programs that can record sounds that are playing on your computer not matter what the format. Let''s say it''s game music or something. I want to know if theres anything that will let me push record and it''ll capture any sounds that get played through the speakers. Freeware/shareware is preferable but I''m interested in anything out there. Hope you can help, tell me if you dont understand what I''m looking for.Thx.
If you''re soundcard has a mixer that supports that kind of thing (check the web site; I wouldn''t know which soundcards do and don''t, except my Sound Blaster Live-- which does).

If not you''re probably reduced to wiring you''re speaker out into a tape recorder/ different computer/ anything that can record audio.

If you want music from a particular game check the the game directory for .mp3s/.wav or anything else that looks like audio. Sometimes the developers will give the music some funky extension, but it''s really just a .wav, and you can play it like any other .wav.

Oh, and try and play the game CD in a CD player. Some older games stream redbook audio right off the CD, like a normal music CD.

So no, I don''t think there''s anything that can do this if your soundcard doesn''t support it.

I think almost any software lets you do this, but you know that little speaker in your tray that adjusts volumes? Well open up the equalizer and then go to Options->Properties. Select Recording, and make sure "Wave" is checked. When you hit okay you can check which device ''record'' records from at the bottom. If you use Wave Audio it will capture sounds from games perfectly.

I wanted to listen to the MDK 2 music and I couldn''t sucessfully reverse engineer their music format but fortunately their EXE contained console commands. I could change the music from the console, record the whole thing, quit the game, crop the wave and then I have the music. =]
Unfortunately this technique doesn''t work if the game is mixing sounds. But if you wanted to get say...a bullet sound, you can just shoot once and cut out the bullet sound (provided there is no music).
Thx guys I''ll try those things you mentioned.
Hi again um I have a question about the sound card mixer. Where do I go to retrive the things I record? Sorry to have to ask these questions but I havent worked much with my sound card so I dont know what I''m doing. I got into options/properties and switched to recording and checked the Wave Output box. Now what? It C-Media Audio Mixer at the bottom. I''m assuming thats what captures sound. But I dont know where to access it at.
Have you tried Sound Recorder? Usually on the Start Menu under Accessories|Multimedia, or something like that.
