Advice on outsourcing the spaceship art for my game

I've decided for my current project to try to outsource some of the artwork. I've never done this before and have some questions: 1.) Where would you post a request (besides, obviously, gamedev's help wanted forum)? 2.) Although my budget is very small, I don't expect free labor. What kind of price range should I be looking for? Do you typically pay by the piece? 3.) Any other advice on finding & working with freelance game artists? Is there a FAQ on this anywhere? Some more details on what I'm looking for, if it helps: The game is a top-down 2D space game and I need space ships/space stations. The artwork might be created in 3D and then rendered. Example of how the artwork might look in context, like the ships and stations in this game, but "better": http://www.kongregate.com/games/wx3lab/starcom Thanks!

By the piece is common especially when money is really a concern. Contracting for the project is also normal at larger scales(have more money readily available).

Artists Forums are a good place to start, just check the links below in my signature.

Depends on what you need and the rates of the artist you want to work with.

Contracting Art For Your Game, or if all else fails Creating Good Game Art When Your Not An Artist.
