Currently I'm working as a Programmer for http://www.ilookabout.com/ but I plan to get into game development. To that end I've worked on several projects in xna, nothing overly interesting. Also I'm reading books on Game AI, Physics and DirectX 10. Also I'm starting to work on game for my portfolio. Essentially I'm wondering if I'm headed in the right direction for a job as a game programmer. Or if there are other steps I should be doing.

They need to be interesting.
You need a compelling portfolio.
Your work experience is fine, and having done uninteresting projects is fine, but you need to step it up a notch.
Then another notch.

Sounds like it.

Keep playing around with what you find interesting, keep trying out new things, concentrate on C++ for portfolio content (assuming you want to get into console and PC development that is) and give The Elusive Demo Portfolio a read.
