One last Maya question: Where are my extrude manipulators?

Hi guys. I've been going through the Maya tutorials and this one has me frustrated. In the tutorial (see 1st pic below) as soon as you click "extrude" extrude manipulators (the little squares) are to show but mine dont. (You can see them in this pic: ) Photobucket Now here is my picture: Photobucket See how they are missing? Also, I should note that the little "show manipulator" icon is set to show. I looked online and saw people who had this issue and they resolved it by toggling construction history on and off, however that doesn't work for me. Does anyone know how to fix this? Is there a preference somewhere that is set wrong? (I looked but didnt see anything). Any help would be greatly appreciated :)
Your screenshot is confusing. You don't appear to have any faces selected, so why would you have a manipulator? In Maya you need to select the faces you want to edit first, then select the tool you want to use (as opposed to 3ds max which is select tool -> select faces).

But I'll assume it's just a weird screenshot, or you can't even see face selection (yikes!). Maya is unrivaled in its ability to spontaneously create new bugs (and on a Mac, you get a whole bonus set of bugs!). The golden trick to solving them is often to delete maya's preferences entirely. This is a folder somewhere near your project, a quick search says: Mac: <Home folder>\Documents\maya\<version number>

Delete it and reopen Maya, it will reset to default.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will give it a try tonight.

I think I may be asking for the wrong thing. Here is a better picture of what I have on my screen:

Notice how there is no blue dots in the center of the faces like in this picture:

How do I get the blue dots in the center of the faces to appear? I was thinking those are the extrude manipulators and the ones I have manipulate just the faces and are more difficult to use.
The dots are from earlier versions of Maya, where you had to click the dot to select the face.
In the newer versions they have been removed, and it doesn't matter where on the face you click to select it.

So, they have nothing to do with extrude.
*slaps forhead*

Thank you so much for the clarification :) It threw me off because I am just learning Maya so I tend to think I screwed something up whenever my stuff doesn't match the tutorial.
