sandbox zombie game idea

ok, heres a rough idea of a game i thought up i do know that this will most likely never take flight but i think it is a real interesting concept, plz criticise :D Ok, the game is a very open sandbox zombie game where you randomly start somewhere in this massive city, the game will be the size of a real city with a believable population and housing, lets say if the city has a population of 2 million, then the game starts with 2 million people and enough houses for 2 million people. You start in the game as a random person whether it be a doctor, police officer or just a normal person, these randomisations of starting people can influence the game your going to play, for example if you are a doctor you will of course have higher medicine, cops have higher charisma or i guess command/influence over people and will most likely start with a weapon. There will be 25 point placed around the city from the rural area’s such as a farm or even an apartment block in the CBD. You can spawn as any person in each of these location from a Hobo to a Police man. ( within reason) So anyway you start at the outbreak of a zombie apocalypse, the outbreak will also start at a random point in the city, you will start somewhere random like driving in your car or in your house, every building and room will be accessible in this game unless of course its locked. At this point in the game you have choices that you must make either grab what you can find and hide, go to a gun store, hospital, army base ,malls etc. But the other npc’s will once the news of this outbreak comes to light on the media some people will ignore or some will rush out of town or home, at first they wont do much but as the outbreak increases panic will start to unfold with people rushing to hospitals and police stations or trying to escape the city, at this point mayhem will insue will people driving everywhere and zombie running around spreading the virus, the thing is everytime you will play this game it will unfold a different way which makes it interesting, by now you will probs have wanted to have found a hiding place or starting to secure a fortress or whatever, you can now convince people if you want to stay with you, alot of people won’t listen to you, they are more likely too as the game progresses as they become more desperate, or if you are holding a weapon they see that you could protect them. In this game you will be able to pick up and move objects like in the games oblivion and fallout 3 except in this there will be alot more objects, you can use these objects to blockade doors passage ways etc. You will be able to join things to other things almost like nails. Everything in this game you must be able to find yourself there will be no wandering salesmen, if you want food then you will either need to grow it or find it, which brings me to the point that everyday you will need to eat/drink which will make the need for scavenging even more difficult, you will also need to scavenge for other things like medicine ,guns and other important objects you may want. In this game there will be a very wide selection of vehicles from helicopters to cars to boats to motorcycles, just like with building you could add things to your vehicles and join them on, there will also again be the need for fuel to run your vehicles. The zombies in this game will be much like the zombies in “dawn of the dead” which are pretty slow and cumbersome, and tend to mass. The zombie will be a ever growing threat in this game as in any zombie game, The game will create this feeling of sadness as you see a city be destroyed over the time
Interesting idea :)

How about the army? In zombie games (e.g. Resident Evil or Left 4 Dead) the army always appears to contain the situation. Will they succeed? Will they fail? Will they nuke the city?

And will there be any goals for the game? For example, short term goals of surviving 30 days or gathering 30 survivors, to long term ones like clearing 1 block of zombies or escaping the city successfully with 5 other people.

Cool idea :) I think I would enjoy playing it.
there could be an ultimate goal like finding your loved one who you find out is alive at day 15 or something, and a whole lot of clues as to where to find her like radio transmissions
I would definitely be building this game if it wasn't such a big task to simulate a city of that size :/ Also, the amount of artwork required would be massive, so this game would need a huge development budget. I'm guessing this is exactly what CityEngine was built for ;)

I hope a zombie game this in-depth gets built some day =D
My only concern would be the "random" starting location/role. You may as well just let people choose what they start out as, since if you make it random people will just quit and restart until they get a "good" combination of starting location/role.

Other than that, it sounds pretty cool... you've got a lot of work ahead of you :-)

Or do what lots of old RPGs did, where you can keep "rolling" your character (building a random one) till you get one you want.
