looking for feedback
Recently, an old friend contacted me and asked me if I'd help him out with art for a game. Currently, here is what I've made in a few hours over the last few days. I'm looking for any feedback on the aesthetic. I will try to keep things updated here.

That's a fun style. I think it would benefit from more shadow for greater depth though.
I want to help design a "sandpark" MMO. Optional interactive story with quests and deeply characterized NPCs, plus sandbox elements like player-craftable housing and lots of other crafting. If you are starting a design of this type, please PM me. I also love pet-breeding games.
It has a freindly, pretty, pastely and cartoonish look to it. I like everything except for the yellow hut-type thing. I do not like the hut because it's lumpy and it's shadows are not defined well enough. Also, it's edges are too sharp in some spots and it does not match the edges on the other sprites.
Now you've got me wondering how nifty the characters are going to look!

Here is an example map. I am making further progress and I feel like showing everyone. This is not a final map. It is merely an example. I will have to plan the world out more but I have a pretty good amount of tiles for maps. There are some things not in the map I have in the tileset but enjoy this teaser.

You could horizontally flip some of the tiles, like the trees, to get a more varied appearance for 'free'. [smile] Color rotation can also work for flowers, rocks, etc.

Good point. I did plan color rotation but I like to have varied styles completely instead of just changing the color of berries. I have some more mining rocks and plants done. I will flip the trees like you said and change the colors up on the rocks like you said but the smaller rocks are orange and white because they stand out as the ones that will be interactable with. Thanks for your input again and I'll take your suggestions into consideration.

You might want to consider choosing two or three 'theme' colors to use on most maps to help them look coherent. For instance, choosing pale green, gray and tan or pale green, tan and blue as the colors of majority. You'd still use other colors, of course - these two or three would just make up a certain percent of what you saw on the screen.
This is very good, It reminds me of RPG Maker.
The best advice I could give you is to perhaps edit the walls of the Water, Because to me it just doesn't look quite right, I think it may be that the walls need some Shadows, or they need to be a little darker, but At the moment it just looks a little bit weird to me.
Also, I would advise that you try to add more variety in the little decorations, (Skulls, Flowers, Rocks ect.) Although in the case of Items like rocks, I would Suggest you alter it's shape, Because at the moment it looks overcrowded, But that's only because I'm Constantly seeing the same items.
Also, Just as a side note, I would also change the grass to look more distinctive. At the moment to me it looks like a colour swap of the water, which makes it look less attractive to me. Maybe try a few blades of grass on the tile, With about 5-10 different grass tiles, and have the programmer write up something so that whenever you or anyone else tries to make a map, and adds grass, it selects one of the grass tiles randomly, and places it down, so that it looks more distinct. Also maybe make the grass a little greener.
