Mr. Marchant,
I am curious as to what type of organization would purchase this product?

Hopefully you identified your target market before you started making it and designed it to meet their needs. I assume that if you did that correctly then the target market you identified will be the people who will buy it.

If you didn't identify who would want it, before you made it.....

FYI, The OP had written to me off this forum and indicated that a fellow student had developed an engine, and that the OP was now attempting to put together a general marketing plan for him. Would have been good if the OP had provided that level of clarity here as well.

Still need more info about the engine to define the relevant market. What platform does it run on? Is it 3D or 2D? What programming language does it utilize? Does it allow plug-ins with other common development tools? Etc.

Based on the OP's original phrasing of the question, I would infer he probably doesn't understand the middleware market very well and therefore attempting to market the engine as a commercial product will more than likely end in failure. Considering the abundance of engines coming to market in compiled object code (Unity and Epic as most popular) the expectation of commercializing even top of the line tools is getting harder to maintain.

I really appreciate the feedback ive received from everyone. My knowledge of the technology is currently limited. kdog you refer to the middle market. I would appreciate any resources for research into this area. I have been to most of the industry websites. Are there terms for the middle market which I can use to guide my research?

No. He didn't. He talked about "middleware." Middleware is what you are trying to market. So you need to teach yourself about middleware for games.

If your market is big-time AAA game publishers:

1) Have a successful game that's sold millions of copies made with your engine. You'll have to do this yourself.

2) Once you do that announce that your engine is available to be licensed.

3) Profit.

Without step #1, no one cares.

If your market is independant developers:

1) Have a successful indy game made with your engine that does well in the market. You'll have to do this yourself.

2) once you do that announce that your engine is available to be licensed.

3) Profit.

Without step #1, no one cares.
