I was reading this article about the top 10 video games that approach art, and I noticed they were listing Final Fantasy VII with a video from the PS3 version. Sure enough, after looking through the PSN store, I found a downloadable version of FFVII. Does anyone know if this thing has updated graphics? Or at least updated cutscenes? I'm thinking of buying it and playing through it again, but I'm not sure if its worth purchasing a second copy if the graphics are the same as the original Playstation version, and google isn't giving me a clear answer...
I believe that its just the PS1 version running on an emulator (PS3 or PSP).

I've downloaded it, and frankly, the graphics are rather horrible. I actually hope they didn't upgrade them.
I have it... same graphics and all. I don't own a copy of the original so I thought it was worth it. Although it is still disappointing to not see any graphical updates.
It's always fun to look at "beautiful" games from yesteryear and see how blocky and crappy they are. Goldeneye, FFVII and Halo are always fun to revisit. Great source of perspective.
Even though they haven't updated the graphics, it is still a great RPG experience well worth the 10€/$ they're asking for it. Then again, if you already have the original PS1 version, there's absolutely no reason to buy the "new" one.

I purchased the game for PS3 last week since I have lost my original PS1 discs, and I greatly enjoyed the game, after several years since I finished it on PS1.

From a marketing perspective it seems like a gimme to revamp it, but I think it would be more like rewriting the whole thing. The production would be just as expensive as the original, maybe more, when it was all over.
I agree, but after the
">tech demo
they released, I was hoping they maybe at least redid the cutscenes to that quality.

FFVII was never a "beautiful" game. It was more like a dog walking on it's front legs. It wasn't the fact it was useful, but simply the fact that the dog could do it at all.

The fact that it did all those things like FMV and multiple discs, and had a great story and music was enough.

Nowadays, we've been spoiled by HDTV resolutions, complex pixel shaders and millions of polys. However, back in the day, I distinctly remember that I was impressed by the graphics of this game - not by the 3D aspect, but the incredibly detailed and lively 2D backgrounds, and the way they blended with the FMV during the game.

As a side note, my friend has a dog that pees while standing on its front legs, and can even walk about a bit while doing that. I'm sure it finds it useful on some level unknown to us humans, even though it is merely amusing for us. It seems to require a considerable effort to perform [grin]
