As stated above, Shadowbane (SB) was all about player created keeps and the sieging and defense of them. The SB model, through the use of the guild system, allowed for a team defense of a keep. At some point in the game, the developers implemented a siege scheduling system to minimize the 4am sieges.
The guilds in SB were fanatical due to the need to work together, not unlike the fanaticism that developed within Left4dead game play, albeit on a much smaller and limited scale.
I have always been amazed there have not been more "cooperative" games such as SB and L4D as it allows for a much more "immersive" and "interactive" game play with your guild or team mates.
Drakostar's game design thoughts about defending against a GM(or AI) is an awesome idea also. Kinda like a MMOSurvival (first use of that word) game. It would easily work as a free play game where you pay additional costs to play mobs and fight against the players.
